Our Airbnb in Rome is in Trastevere, within a short bus ride or walking distance to the sights we want to see.
Here is what Wikipedia has to say about this neighbourhood of Rome:
"Colourful Trastevere is a funky, bohemian area that clings to its centuries-old working-class roots. It's known for traditional and innovative trattorias, craft beer pubs and artisan shops as well as simple B&Bs and budget hotels."
An ancient little church right outside our apartment. It once served as a hospital. There were large cracks in the ceiling and it was undergoing both excavation and renovation. In the first photo are human remains.
The first of our two days here is in Imperial Rome, the Palantine Hill, Roman Forum and Colesseum. We can walk from 'home'.
Another church we wander into
Back out on the street, the women in this shop were refurbishing old items and furniture for resale:
This skull and crossbones were in another church:
A beautiful fountain...on the way to Piazza Garibaldi:
We wander up to Piazza Garibaldi, get a beer from a street vendor and enjoy the view of Rome.
The sycamore trees lining the street on the way to the piazza are beautiful in the sunshine:
Random photos from our wanderings the rest of the day:
So much Italian leather, love the men's' shoes:
Day 2 in Rome is the Vatican, the Sistene Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Photos not allowed in the Sistene Chappel. We are grateful that we have 'Skip the Line' tour tickets...the line up to get in is hours long.
The president of Peru was visiting, so we got to see the Pope's Swiss Guard in action.
The second floor, centre balcony between the middle pillars is the balcony from where the Pope addresses crowds.
Part of the area where people can gather to hear the Pope.
Random photos from our wanderings this day:
The Trevi Fountain is so immense the camera can't capture it all at once. Stunning!
Go here to see the entire fountain in all its glory:
We have no more time to explore this interesting city where ancient ruins and modern city life are so closely entwined.
From us to Rome with Love...and now we are off to the hill towns of Tuscany and Umbria.
