What an amazing town to stroll. The main street (Hauptstrasse) with all its shops and squares is a mile-long pedestrian boulevard running the length of the old town.
Just below is the waterfront along the Neckar River with live music.
Then there's the Philosopher's walk from the Heidelberg University, over the ancient bridge (built 1788) to the other side of the waterfront.
Plus we find this wonderful little Lebanese restaurant in the Marktplatz ... such flavours.
Access to the Heidelberg Castle is also from this street and of course, there are the cathedrals!
The German Apothocary Museum in the Castle: Everything is very carefully labelled. Note the scales.
Beautiful storage jars.
A portable kit:
Such an enormous need for storage:
Industrialization brought this coal-fired distiller into pharmacies. Infusions and potions could be made now on a scale not previously known.
Bayer pharmaceuticals helped with much of this museum and seem to have a bit of a presence in Heidelberg.
This is a small wine keg.
Here's the bigger one. The idea was to purchase a sample of the wine then stand on the platform over the barrel to drink it and keep the souvenir glass.
Looking up at the castle from Marktplatz:
Looking down at the old bridge.
A stately mansion:
A Cathedral in the old town:
And here in this very traditional place is this figure perched above the main door:

This beautiful building in the old town is part of the university:
Still can't figure out how they do this:
Roma street musicians ... liked the music ... and they performed with great energy.
We aren't used to such crowds. This is on a Saturday. Clearly, the locals enjoy their old town as much as the tourists do.
In 1703 - 1706 this statue of Hercules was built and placed in Marktplatz to symbolize the herculean effort it took to rebuild the city after the 1700s.
One of several statues on the old bridge.
Off to Munich
